Not that long ago Ometepe was a very isolated place, with boats passing by only once every 14 days. Things like beer and rum were difficult to come by and many locals made their own rice-based moonshine. With the influx of commercial beer and rum, the art has been all but lost. However, there remains one little old lady of about 89 years, referred to on the island as Culiacan, who still whips up her special brew in clay equipment over a wood fire in her crumbling old farmhouse. Take a quick tour and she´ll show you how it´s made and you can take a sample…if you dare! Tours are easily taken on the taxi ride to or from the hotel. All that is asked is that you buy a little of her product or leave a tip, as she is quite old and lives alone.
